Grizzly Marching Band
at the University of Montana!
The University of Montana Grizzly Marching Band has been a cherished group on the University of Montana campus for over 100 years. They liven the football games and other campus activities throughout the year, giving student life a vocal and visual reminder of school colors and school spirit and the fact that the college experience is not just books and lectures, but a communal sense of pride and friendship.
From the Grizzly Marching Band web site:
Marching in contemporary corps-style, the program stays on the cutting edge of trends in outdoor music performances.
The band is certainly hardworking, playing at every home game during the football season.
Many people who were in grade school and high school marching bands wonder if playing in a college marching band will be as fun, or perhaps too demanding with all the other requirements of college life. But if you know how and love to play a band instrument and especially if you have the hands on experience, the college marching band could be a really rewarding and memorable extra curricular activity.
Old West Montana Pianos
The wild west mythology of Montana always includes saloons in old mining, trapping, lumber towns like Butte, Whitefish, Lewistown, Virginia City, Gild Edge and Fort Benton, and besides a long list of services like gambling and dining, there were various types of adult entertainment offerings, with provisions that included a top shelf of liquors from New York, and maybe even a bottle or two from Europe, and perhaps, most importantly, some exciting form of night time entertainment.
A big draw for saloon clientele was the piano. People would come from miles around when a piano made it to town. Starved for entertainment and a place to be with other like folk, especially at night, people would gather to drink and play and to hear a piano be played. As the story goes, if one saloon secured the safe arrival of a piano from a transport from the East Coast, others proprietors were forced to follow suit, else lose a big percentage of business. The piano itself was a star.
Of course, piano repair and restoration services would have to wait until much, much later for Montana and most of the West.
