Factory Location: Long Island City, New York
Serial Number Dates: 1865 - present
History:
The Steinway & Sons Piano Company is perhaps the best known and well respected piano company in the world. Its fame is well deserved, not only for the excellence of craftsmanship, but also for several technological advances in piano making (e.g. full iron plates, accelerated action, diaphragmatic soundboard, "Permafree" Action, "Hexagrip" pin block). The first factory was built in 1854 in New York City. The company also made square grands, but they were discontinued in 1923.
