Restoring the Piano Plate
When your piano arrives from North Carolina, we will apply our 25 Step Piano Restoration process. This includes a thorough inspection of the piano plate. We will make sure that there are no cracks in the plate. If there are broken agraffes, they will be replaced. If the capo bar has grooves left from the imprint of the wire strings, we will carefully file away the grooves, making sure that we keep the original shape of the capo bar intact. It will be like new. We will also refelt and refit the plate, making it better ready to hold the pin block in place.
Repairing a Cracked Piano Plate
It is relatively rare to come across a cracked piano plate, but we have found piano restoration shops that refuse to repair a cracked plate. But if the crack can be properly braced, Michael Sweeney Piano Piano Craftsman will be able to make the repairs. With over 50 years continuous hands on experience, Michael Sweeney has the technical understanding needed to properly brace a cracked plate. Professional know-how is important since a piano plate is subject to tremendous amounts of stress (pressure from the tightened strings). If not repaired properly, the piano will continually fall out of pitch, a mechanical fault often blamed on the piano tuner.
If we determine that the cracked plate is impossible to repair (unable to properly brace), we will make every effort to find a replacement that exactly matches the defective plate.
