Who does University Piano Repair?

Very often universities and colleges in Texas, both public and private, have what is called a "resident piano technician." A resident piano technician is either contracted or employed by the particular school to repair pianos owned by the school. Often the number of pianos at a single college or university will be large enough that an entire department will be dedicated to piano maintenance, repair, rebuilding, refinishing and restoration. At schools with large inventories, such as the University of Texas at Austin, piano technicians will be in care of hundreds of pianos -- class room and performance pianos -- at one time. As you can imagine, the job not only entails skilled handling of the pianos themselves, but also a constant interchange with faculty and students about pianos, piano music and the relationship between performer and instrument. Performance pianos are especially cared for at the academic level since the school's reputation somewhat depends upon the old tradition of academic exhibition where faculty and students perform for those invested in the cultural caliber and future of the artistic community.

Often, universities and colleges will own their own pianos rather than rent them from local or national piano company contractors. When the pianos are rented, repair and refinishing is usually a responsibility of the contractor. Sometimes contractors will send pianos to our shop for repair. A piano coming from Austin, Texas or Dallas, Texas, for example and arriving to our shop in need of repair will take about a week from pickup of your piano in Texas to delivery to our piano restoration shop in West Chester, PA, and back to Texas with your beautiful piano completely restored.

Often, even if a college or university employs its own piano technician, at times there are jobs too big or space too little for the resident technician to tackle. Thus, the technicians will sometimes send large piano restoration projects to piano repair shops such as Sweeney Piano. Often the whole piano restoration project will go unnoticed by the local public. Even faculty and staff are often unaware of the repair work being done on pianos on a regular basis. But, it's a fact: good piano music in the performance halls of Texas schools depends upon this American network of people who love music and who are professionally skilled at repairing the pianos in their charge and care.
